After Coldplay surprise duet with Fher from Mexican rock band Maná in Guadalajara, we’re staying alert for any clues as to what the British rock band might be covering on their next stop in Mexico. Their next performances will take place at Foro Sol in Mexico City on April 3, 4, 6 and 7. And with many great artists calling the nation’s capital, our heads are spinning with possibilities on who they’ll pay homage to next. Could it be Café Tacvba? Caifanes? The Azules of Los Angeles? Well the fans are buzzing about it being a tribute to none other than El Divo de Juárez, the iconic Juan Gabriel.
This theory comes from an interview with Mexican media outlet Imagen, who after seeing Coldplay’s cover of Bachata Rosa by Juan Luis Guerra in the Dominican Republic, when asked about potential covers in the upcoming Mexico City dates.
“Perhaps Juan Gabriel?” “Querida? Or something. I don’t know, I’m just asking!” the host asks Chris Martin during the interview to see if there’s any interest or scoop he could reveal. “Juan Gabriel? Maybe. We We’ll try,” Chris Martin, lead singer of Coldplay, replies.
In Spanish, he then says, “I’m really nervous to sing in Spanish, so I have to rehearse every song so much.” He then continues in Spanglish, “So some nights, not possible.” We love seeing the effort Chris Martin makes to speak Spanish and in doing so appreciate the local culture.
Could it be that Coldplay interprets the Mexican singer-songwriter icon “Querida” on one of the next dates in Mexico City? Twitter users are already asking for and hoping for a special appearance from their favorite Mexican artists, including appearances by Siddhartha or Café Tacvba.
Some Twitter users are suggesting other Juan Gabriel songs that might be easier for the “Viva La Vida” singer to perform.
Whether Coldplay decides to perform an in-person Mexican duo, cover a popular Mexican song, or skip the extra show, it’s clear that the upcoming Foro Sol dates are long overdue. We look forward to all the surprises and potential collaborations from the British talent!
